You Have To See Your Reflection

You Have To See Your Reflection was a community portrait project created by Jay Blacks at Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration. The project offered free portraits as a way to create an accessible space for people to be seen, celebrated, and documented with care. In one day, Jay photographed community members, families, friends, and neighbors, honoring the beauty, presence, and reflection of Milwaukee’s Black community.

A Day of Light

A Day of Light was a community portrait project created by Jay Blacks in the backyard of his family home in Milwaukee, a house purchased by his great-grandmother in 1954 and held by the family for generations. What began as a personal exercise to practice portraiture became a meaningful way to reconnect with Milwaukee through the people, relationships, and community that shaped him. In one day, Jay captured more than 80 portraits of friends, family, and extended community members, offering the images freely and creating an accessible, low-pressure space for people to be seen, celebrated, and documented.
